10,000 scale model of Montale, Province of Pistoia, Tuscany, Italy,
(2007).
Note:
During a workshop focusing on active citizenships, urban
exploration and transformation, the children of Montale a
small ancient village near Pistoia in Italy, manufactured a
1:10,000 scale Participatory 3D Model (P3DM). Thereafter
they visualized data shared by adults (mainly elderly
people) through a process of intergenerational knowledge
exchange. Thereafter the children were than accompanied in
reflecting about the past, present and possible future of
their bio-cultural region.

This process generated a collective sketch
map featuring the places relevant to children. The process
allowed exploring these sites and focusing on a place along
a little river which is abandoned and in bad condition.
Children planned how to reclaim and restore the riverbanks,
cleaning it from rubbish and and planting a little garden
with the help of neighbours. |

The model includes the
administrative boundaries of Montale, Province of Pistoia,
Tuscany. It includes a mountainous zone covered by forests
that gradually leave the place to small villages on the
hills between olives trees and vines. The town at the bottom
of the valley is where services new houses and industrial
zones are concentrated. Children spend their free-time in
their houses and they have few moments of direct and
autonomous experience of the outdoor, especially in the
urban environment. The model permit a vision of their
landscape as a whole, with a story in evolution, and it
arises the consciousness of the possibility to experience
and transform your own place of living. |
