P3DM: Guiding Principles and Applications

Geographic Information System (GIS) technology is becoming more and more widespread for storing and manipulating geo-referenced information. It is an essential component in both the construction of 3-D models and in optimizing data interpretation.

Preparing the source map: The GIS prepares a scale map (source map) featuring contour lines and geo-referenced scaled gridlines.

Tracing and cutting

A carbon paper as large as the source map is assembled.
Using the source map and the carbon paper the single contour lines are outlined on carton boards.

Single contour lines are then cut out.

The "blank"

The "blank" scaled relief model is properly oriented North-South

Pasting layers

Each layer is pasted on the top of the previous one maintaining appropriate geo-references.
