Participatory GIS, Mapping and Visualization in Local-level Spatial Planning

Short Course for professionals and graduate students
Duration: 3 weeks 27th March to 24th April 2006
Location: ITC, Enschede, The Netherlands http://www.itc.nl
Coordinators: Dr. Michael K. McCall and Drs. Jeroen Verplanke

Living Costs for 3 weeks will be approx. Euros 500 to 600

Introduction
The module brings together 3 current threads in spatial planning:

bullet

Participatory spatial planning & management (PSP) in land & land resources has a new dynamic of empowerment and good governance imperatives.

bullet

Dynamics of land resource changes cause planners to deal with many conflicts; shifting interests, changes in power balance and spatial economies.

bullet

Participatory mapping & P-GIS, together with appropriate visualization techniques, give insight into spatial conflicts problems.

Contents
These threads will be your guidance within the context of:

bullet

Issues in participatory spatial planning & management.

bullet

Concepts of indigenous spatial knowledge.

bullet

Processes of conflict analysis including information tools, conflict types, and stakeholder characteristics and interests.

You will use the following tools & techniques in this course:

bullet

Participatory spatial data acquisition, participatory mapping, PRA.

bullet

GPS, mobile GIS, Arc-Pad, field data recording and data preparation.

bullet

Visualization of spatial relationships, spatial conflicts, interactive mapping.

bullet

Conflict management processes, e.g. types of conflict resolution, and policy instruments.

bullet

Applications of participatory mapping & P-GIS to e.g. conflict mapping, customary entitlements to land & NRM; community environmental mapping.

Objectives
Upon completion of this module students should be able to:

bullet

Understand the context of PSP & collaborative management.

bullet

Recognize the value of indigenous spatial knowledge.

bullet

Use various tools/techniques to elicit spatial indigenous knowledge, including participatory mapping.

bullet

Understand and utilize the basics of GPS, and Arc Pad in a Mobile GIS, for field data recording.

bullet

Independently map and/or visualize the major issues in a given spatial conflict.

bullet

Utilize appropriate basic software for visualization of spatial data, in new graphics software, and interactive, dynamic mapping.

bullet

Assess application of these tools in PSP and collaborative management.
